Meet Leadership Expert, Rita Perea

Rita Perea is celebrating her 15th year as President and CEO of Rita Perea Leadership Coaching and  Consulting.  She specializes in working with senior leaders and managers to successfully establish executive presence, lead high-performing teams, engage employees, manage change and create work/life balance. As an experienced executive herself, Rita brings a powerful blend of passion and professionalism to both private- and public-sector organizations. As a leadership consultant, executive coach, talent development trainer and keynote speaker, she shares her 25-plus years of experience with senior leaders in a wide range of industries.  To serve the needs of global leaders, Rita’s firm has a west coast office in Santa Barbara, CA and a midwest office in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Rita holds both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree. She also possesses a Specialist’s degree in Leadership from Drake University and is currently a Doctoral degree candidate. Additionally, Mrs. Perea is certified as a Work-life Balance Specialist, a Master Cognitive Coach, a Team Facilitation Trainer and a Spiritual Director, specializing in mindfulness in the workplace.

Rita’s professional affiliations include membership in the NEXUS Executive Women’s Alliance,  Iowa Women’s Foundation, National Speakers Association, the American Society of Training and Development, and the Society for Human Resource Managers. She is an active member of Rotary International and has served in numerous leadership positions at the local, national and international levels. Rita is a graduate of the Leadership Iowa program and served on their Board of Governors for two terms.

Perea currently serves on the board of the Friends of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and the Finance committee of the Iowa Women’s Foundation. She was also appointed by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to serve on the Iowa Engineering Examiners Board.  In 2016, she will become the first public, non-engineering member to lead that Board.  Rita is also passionate about fostering leadership skills and community involvement amongst young professionals. She launched both a Rotary Club for Emerging Leaders and The Founders Club to identify and develop the next generation of leaders in the Des Moines Metro area.

Rita has also developed a strong interest in gardening that led her to become certified as a Master Gardener and a member of the American Garden Writers Association. She specializes in creating calming outdoor spaces that encourage mindfulness and personal reflection. She founded The International Contemplative Gardening Association to foster a sense of community for this unique style of gardening.

Rita was recently nominated as one of the sixty “People to Watch in 2015” in Des Moines.
